Edit: Hello update. So my first fix was whittling a piece of my toothbrush and melting it using my lighter so the broken piece off the Y connector would hold. Then used tenacious tape (tbh I prefer duct).
However this particular arm is one of the legs of the front of the tent so the pressure from the poles is rather extreme.
I then cut the cords and moved the y connector around so the broken piece was connected to the main pole that runs down the length of the tent and doesn’t need as much bend.
I then tried various splints, each failing until I used a tent peg. I bound the splint with tenacious tape and spare guy line. I also tightened the cords.
Heating the connector using hot water was not an option as I’m cold soaking this entire trip (for the first time. And for the record cold brew coffee is really good!)
The tent held up ok however the pressure of the poles is incredibly strong and the pole and connector bent away from each other no matter how much I tried to hold it. Again I would have been better with duct not tenacious.
All would have been good except we were hit with a mini tornado with winds up to 45km per hour last night. My poor BA held up as much as she could but the tent was pretty much flattened and we (BA and I) got drenched.
I’m on the Canary Islands doing the GR131. These islands are very dry normally but when foul weather hits it has a field day. At least the locals are all celebrating the rain.
I now have my hands on some superglue and will try that. I still have 28 days left of this hike and mail here usually takes 2 weeks.
If the superglue doesn’t work then I’ll try one of the other brilliant methods.
I just was to thank the wonderful hiking community for putting together so many great ideas. I was totally overwhelmed. Thank you all and happy new year 🙏🏼
Ps. The GR131 is a fantastic northern hemisphere winter hike if anyone is looking to escape to some normally sunny islands 😊
Help needed 🙏🏼🙏🏼. My big Agnes pole set has broken at a 3 point y connector. I’m in the middle of a multi day hike and it’s started coming down with rain.
The small silver metal part has broken away from the 3 point Y connector. This is crucial for the pole to connect to a create the tension that makes the tent “arc”.
Does anyone know how I can fix this on the trail? I have spare guy line and tenacious tape only plus a pole sheath (although this is not useful except as a splint )
The last time it was restrung was 3 years ago so the shock cord may be lose enough to reuse if the option is to cut the existing shock cord.
I’m far away from anywhere to get any more shock cord, a new tent or any other item.
Any suggestions are gladly welcome 🙏🏼 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼Thank you in advance and Happy New Year."
